How to take an exam photo at home (with just a phone)
You do not need a studio or a professional camera to produce a photograph that passes an exam portal's checks. A modern phone and a few minutes of care are enough. This guide walks through exactly how to do it, and how to avoid the mistakes that get photos rejected.
1. Set up a plain, light background
Almost every Indian exam wants a plain white or light-coloured background. Stand about half a metre in front of a plain wall — a white or cream wall works best. Avoid textured walls, posters, switchboards, curtains and doors. If you cannot find a plain wall, hang a clean white bedsheet and smooth out the creases. Leave a gap between yourself and the wall so you do not cast a hard shadow behind you.
2. Use soft, even daylight
Face a window during the day so natural light falls evenly on your face. Do not stand with the window behind you — that turns you into a silhouette. Avoid direct overhead tube-lights, which cast shadows under the eyes and nose, and never use the harsh on-camera flash. Even, front-on light keeps skin tones natural and the background clean.
3. Frame your head and shoulders
Ask someone to take the photo, or prop the phone up and use a timer — an outstretched-arm selfie distorts your face. Hold the phone at eye level, roughly an arm's length away, in portrait orientation. Include your head and the top of your shoulders, with a little space above your head. Keep your face square to the camera, eyes open, with a neutral expression and your mouth closed.
4. Follow the appearance rules
Most portals require a recent photograph (often within the last three to six months). Do not wear a cap or hat, and remove spectacles if they cause glare or hide your eyes. Both ears should usually be visible, and your full face must be clearly in focus. Some exams — SSC, for instance — ask you to print your name and the date across the bottom of the photo, so check your notification.
5. Resize to the exact size the portal wants
This is where most uploads fail. Each exam demands exact pixel dimensions and a narrow file-size band (for example 20–50 KB), in JPG. Instead of guessing, open your exam's page in the Exam Photo Toolkit, upload the photo you just took, and the tool crops it to the required dimensions and compresses it into the accepted file-size range — all in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device. Download the ready file and upload it to the portal.
A quick pre-upload checklist
- Plain, light background with no shadow.
- Even daylight on the face; no flash or silhouette.
- Head-and-shoulders framing, face square to the camera.
- No cap; spectacles off if they glare; neutral expression.
- Exact pixel size and file-size band for your exam, in the required format.
